As part of her world-wide tour to launch her new book, Angel Cake, Cathy Cassidy will be coming to Hinde House School!

Since her debut novel, Dizzy, was published in 2004, Cathy has become one of the UK’s leading children’s authors with an army of devoted fans (primarily girls aged nine plus) who correspond with her on a regular basis via her website cathycassidy.com and devour her books as though their lives depended on it. Her books have sold over 700,000 copies in the UK alone and at a recent bookshop signing for the paperback release of her seventh book GingerSnaps, fans travelled over 100 miles to meet her and queued for two hours.

We're really lucky to get Cathy for this event. Students will get a chance to question Cathy about her books and maybe even get a signed copy of her book. Special Invites will be sent to students to attend this event. However if you would like to meet Cathy, then please see the librarian as soon as possible.

The visit takes place on the morning of July 9th in our main hall.

Angel Cake follows the story of Anya, a young polish girl who dreams of moving to Britain to start a brand-new life. When the dream becomes a reality and she moves to Liverpool with her parents and sister, things aren’t quite what she expected. As she sits in a school where nobody understands her, she dreams of Polish summer skies and the place where she once belonged. Then Anya meets bad boy Dan. He’s no angel, but she’s sure there’s a sweeter side to him. And when things begin to fall apart, Anya realizes she’s not alone.

Bog Child wins the Carnegie Award PDF Print E-mail

Siobhan Dowd's fantastic novel set in 1980's Northern Ireland has won the coveted Carnegie Medal.

The book follows an archaeological dig against a backdrop of the unrest and IRA Hunger Strikers. It weaves both of the stories into a fantastic tale of human life and death. A worthy winner of this great prize.

Sadly Siobhan is no longer with us having died of Breast Cancer in 2007. She was a fantastic talent and will be sorely missed. She left us however with 4 superb books. A Pure Swift Cry, The London Eye Mystery, Bog Child and Solace of the Road. All are available in the library. Bog Child, of cause, is also on the Sheffield Children's Book List for 2009.

Great Read

When Mike and his friends decide to go for a day's cruising around the coast of Scotland, they are surprised to come across a mysterious barren island that doesn't show up on any map or satellite image. Determined to explore it, they make some chilling discoveries: piles of bones, evidence of explosives, and a strange old abandoned building full of scientific equipment - including gas masks. But still none of them quite realizes the trouble they're in until a helicopter flies in and blows up their boat, leaving them stranded...and falling desperately ill. Inspired by a real island in Scotland used for anthrax testing, this eerie and contemporary thriller will keep readers on the very edge of their seat, in the style of Malcolm Rose's acclaimed ""Kiss of Death"".
