Bog Child wins the Carnegie Award PDF Print E-mail
Written by The Librarian

Siobhan Dowd's fantastic novel set in 1980's Northern Ireland has won the coveted Carnegie Medal.

The book follows an archaeological dig against a backdrop of the unrest and IRA Hunger Strikers. It weaves both of the stories into a fantastic tale of human life and death. A worthy winner of this great prize.

Sadly Siobhan is no longer with us having died of Breast Cancer in 2007. She was a fantastic talent and will be sorely missed. She left us however with 4 superb books. A Pure Swift Cry, The London Eye Mystery, Bog Child and Solace of the Road. All are available in the library. Bog Child, of cause, is also on the Sheffield Children's Book List for 2009.

image from carnegie siteLast years winner was Philip Reeve for 'Here Lies Arthur'. Philip is known to many as the author of the 'Mortal Engines' series. This book takes a different slant on the Arthur story.

'A brand new novel from a leading children's author Gwyna is just a small girl, a mouse, when she is bound in service to Myrddin the bard - a traveller and spinner of tales. But Myrddin transfroms her - into a lady goddess, a boy warrior, and a spy. Without Gwyna, Myrddin will not be able to work the most glorious transformation of all - and turn the leader of a raggle-taggle war-band into King Arthur, the greatest hero of all time.' 'Young children will identify with the little mouse who uses the pages of this book to document his fears - from loud noises and the dark, to being sucked down the plughole. Packed with details and novelty elements including flaps, die-cuts and even a hilarious fold-out map, this is an extraordinary picture book. It is a winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal 2008.' Great Read

How I Live Now

It would be much easier to tell this story if it were all about a chaste and perfect love between Two Children Against the World at an Extreme Time in History. But let's face it, that would be crap. Daisy is sent from New York to England to spend a summer with cousins she has never met. They are Isaac, Edmond, Osbert and Piper. And two dogs and a goat. She's never met anyone quite like them before - and, as a dreamy English summer progresses, Daisy finds herself caught in a timeless bubble. It seems like the perfect summer. But their lives are about to explode. Falling in love is just the start of it. War breaks out - a war none of them understands, or really cares about, until it lands on their doorstep. The family is separated. The perfect summer is blown apart. Daisy's life is changed forever - and the world is too.
